The Voice of Heaven

“My sheep hear My voice …” John 10:27

This amazing statement made by Jesus invites us into a reality that we often fail to enjoy. Hearing Jesus speak to us is natural and normal for believers. Sadly however, many Christians state that they struggle to hear the voice of God.

Notice however that Jesus did not say that we hear His words. Rather, we hear His voice. We have been so conditioned to the hearing of words, that many times we miss the voice of heaven. Heaven does not always “speak” with words.

His voice is as gentle as the morning breeze, though it can be as thunderous as the sound of many waters (Rev. 1:15). Our God can be loud, but in speaking to the human heart, He is soft and gentle. So why does He whisper when He could easily shout? Or why is He often vague when clarity is what our hearts long for?

Commands are the language of servants, not sons. Seeking to hear and understand is the privilege of relationship. It is through the gentle whisper within, that He calls us to commune and not just obey.

It was only as Moses drew aside, that the Lord began to speak (Ex. 3:4). Likewise, it’s as we respond to the soft stirring within, that we receive more. Many times, it is a faint impression, or a thought the comes out of nowhere, or the simple knowing that stirs inside. Responding to these gentle promptings reveals the sensitivity of a heart tuned to heaven. That is what the Lord longs for – a people who know His voice and can therefore walk in His ways.
