Love in Hard Places

When life is easy, love is sweet. When relationships flow and hearts beat as one, then loving comes naturally. What about the times however when our hearts are out of sync and difficulties come knocking at our door? Can we love when the journey gets tough, words are sharp and understanding dwindles?

It is hard to hold onto love when minds reason and emotions rage. Yet love is made for hard places. Love is the oil that keeps the engine running and makes rough places smooth. It is the patience that keeps us listening. It is the hope that keeps us pushing through. Love does not fail, and it does not give up (1 Corinthians 13:7,8). Love tells us that relationships and connection is worth fighting for. Love holds us steady when the heart would rather run and hide. Love softens words and opens ears. It paves the way for prodigals to return home, even when it is our feet that must make that journey.

Do not give up on love. Do not say that the situation is hopeless, and hearts are too hard. Hold onto love and let it work its way into the core of your dreams and the centre of your prayers. Let love paint pictures of what can be. Let love woo you to keep talking and listening. Let it provide a pathway out of contention and despair. Love will not fail. It is stronger than the will and opinions of man. Love will break down barriers and open doors that have been slammed shut. Hold onto love and let it guide you, for love comes from God. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him (1 John 4:14).
